Mary Beth Altier

Mary Beth Altier is a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs. She received a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University in 2011 and worked as a postdoctoral researcher on a UK government and Department of Homeland Security funded study of terrorist disengagement, re-engagement, and recidivism at the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Altier is currently working on a book manuscript that examines why citizens support political parties associated with terrorist groups in developed and developing democracies. The manuscript is based upon her dissertation, which won the American Political Science Association’s Ernst B. Haas award. Dr. Altier also received the American Political Science Association’s Best Paper Award from the European Politics and Society Organized Section in 2015. Her research is published in the Journal of Peace Research, Security Studies, Terrorism and Political Violence, Behavioral Sciences of Terrorism and Political Aggression, Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, and Journal of Strategic Security and she sits on the editorial board of Behavioral Sciences of Terrorism and Political Aggression and Studies in Conflict & Terrorism.
