Sustaining Peace Seminar Series with Jared Kotler

Jared Kotler from the United Nation Department of Political Affairs presented the background and context of the Colombian peace process between the Colombian government and FARC-EP that culminated in a Comprehensive Peace Agreement in November 2016. Kotler noted the potential for the peace process to contribute to a stable national government, and the hope that regional and international consensus that would make it successful. It is also a comprehensive agreement that it emphasizes political participation ''So, inclusion is very important," Kotler said,"and the lack of it sometimes is the main reason for peace talks to fall apart.''

Kotler reiterated that in Colombia there is a real opportunity for peace through a sustained effort to consolidate the peace process. He noted that the Colombian agreement offers an example that negotiation can be an effective method for settlement of violent conflict.
